Hey, guys! I am in Louisiana this week for Christmas and for the past few years we have made it a tradition to head over to Natchitoches for their annual Christmas Festival. If you have seen the movie “Steel Magnolias” then you might know Natchitoches is where the movie was filmed. The Christmas Festival was even featured in the movie! I absolutely adore Natchitoches! It is a small historic city that looks a lot like New Orleans. If you love fleur de lis and french style buildings, you are in for a treat! The Christmas Festival is one of my favorite times of the year. There are food vendors set up all along the water and there is even a live band to keep you entertained.
The food vendors serve a lot of Louisiana specific foods which is great if you are visiting the area. Each vendor requires tickets to be used instead of cash or card which can easily be purchased at the ticket booth. There are also several small activities for children like laser tag and slides.
Across from the vendors and water, is a long line of Christmas light displays. Each one is specific to Louisiana and Natchitoches which is really unique and fun.
Along the main street just above the road with the food vendors, you will find fun little shops, streets covered in Christmas lights, and even horse carriages. There are also several restaurants you can eat at if you don’t feel like eating at the vendor tents. The horse carriage will take you around the beautiful city so you can see the lights and the main houses that were used during the filming of “Steel Magnolias”.
My favorite part of the festival is the fireworks. The fireworks show happens only on Saturday’s at 7 PM. The show starts after Thanksgiving until Christmas. You are welcome to bring chairs and blankets to set up along the water. I have never personally done this, and I have always been able to find a great standing place with an amazing view of the fireworks.
Even if you aren’t in the area around Christmastime, it is still worth visiting Natchitoches.
